Farr urges collaboration of Monterey Bay area industries

Monterey Herald
Tue, 08/31/2010

Monterey Bay's economy can grow if industries realize all the opportunities for collaboration, Rep. Sam Farr told government and business leaders Monday in Marina.

There are significant opportunities for cooperative ventures in such areas as agriculture, ocean research and defense, Farr said at the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments' "Envisioning the Monterey Bay Area 2035 Regional Blueprint." The event was sponsored by the Marina Technology Cluster.

Farr, D-Carmel, said he gathered leaders of local defense agencies a few years ago, and the people didn't realize what all the other groups did. He then formed Team Monterey, a group of 10 agencies that looks at ways to cooperate.

That idea can be expanded to other fields, Farr told a group of about 20. The Monterey Bay area, he said, "is a center of excellence in marine science. The brainpower for the ocean lives here."

Pinnacles' new heights: Promotion to national park status would draw more tourist dollars

Monterey County Weekly
Thu, 09/02/2010

Perhaps it's a matter of not seeing the mountains for the spires, or the rock canyons for the caves.

Rep. Sam Farr (D-Carmel) uses a more familiar phrase to describe his federal bill that would designate Pinnacles, now a national monument, as a national park.

"So often we can't see the forest for the trees," Farr says. "We live in a beautiful area, and we just accept the way things are and we don't question them."

AOL acquires mobile app Rally Up and the Santa Cruz team that dreamed it up

San Jose Mercury News
Sun, 09/05/2010

SANTA CRUZ - When a group of young Santa Cruz techies piled into a rented WI-FI-enabled RV with their laptops for an impromptu week-long programming retreat last November, they couldn't have imagined that one of the largest and, well, not very geeky, Internet services and media companies in the country would soon come knocking with a multi-million dollar offer.

This week, AOL announced it hired the entire Rally Up team to ignite its nascent Mobile First initiative in the Consumer Applications and Mobile division. The company also acquired the group's latest two applications, Rally Up, a location-based social network application that links "real" friends; and FacePlant, a not-yet-released iPhone video chat application that lets users see which of their contacts are on WiFi networks and available for FaceTime calls.

Electric Vehicles: What You Need to Know About Home Charging

San Jose Mercury News
Sun, 09/05/2010

You've reserved your electric vehicle and can't wait to zip around town in an all-electric Nissan Leaf, plug-in Chevrolet Volt or one of the models soon to hit the road.

But choosing the "EV" that's right for you is just the first step. You will need a reliable place to charge up your electric car, and for most people that means getting a "charging station" installed in their garage -- a process likely to require a permit and sign-off from your local building inspector.

Among the questions to ask yourself: What kind of home charging system does the auto maker advise you to get? How many miles do you expect to drive each day? What time do you expect to start charging your car? Most importantly, have you told your utility company you plan to get one?

Organic berries better, researcher says: Two-year study looked at Watsonville strawberry harvests

Santa Cruz Sentinel
Sun, 09/05/2010

WATSONVILLE -- If you want a better berry, go organic, a new strawberry study says.

What's more, organic strawberry growers produce more healthful soil, according to the two-year study of 26 fields in the Watsonville area.

The study, published this week in the online journal, PLoS One, lends credence to the beliefs of many organic strawberry consumers.

"They think they are healthier. They buy them because they are tastier, and they buy organic strawberries because they are better for the Earth," said John Reganold, the Washington State University professor who led the multidisciplinary research team.

The research was conducted on 13 adjacent pairs of organic and conventional fields used by growers of Driscoll's and Pacific Gold berries in 2004 and 2005.

Water Coalition files another challenge to UCSC expansion: Group contends environmental report isn't adequate

Santa Cruz Sentinel
Sat, 09/04/2010

SANTA CRUZ -- Opponents of university growth filed an additional court challenge Friday against UC Santa Cruz's request for expanded city water service, arguing that an environmental study approved last month was insufficient.

The Community Water Coalition argues that the state-required environmental impact report connected to the university's application for receiving water beyond the city's current territory is flawed because the city, not the university, should have made the request.
