Bio for Lara Shipley, BSN, PHN, CLE
After completing high school in Saratoga, California, I attended San Diego State University for pre-nursing courses and then moved back to the Bay Area and completed my RN degree at DeAnza College in 1991. I received my BSN from California State, Dominguez Hills and I am currently in graduate school there to obtain my Masters in the Science of Nursing (MSN) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) training. That’s what I want to be when I grow up, an FNP! I also received certified lactation education (CLE) from UCSD. I am a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Theta Tau honor societies.
I have worked for three different hospitals in Oncology, Orthopedics, and Medical-Surgical units both in San Jose and locally. I have worked in many doctor’s offices primarily internal medicine, but most recently a local pediatric practice. I enjoy the rapport that develops when working with patients and their families in an office or clinic rather than the hospital setting. I have been working in College Health for over a year at Monterey Peninsula College, and I really enjoy it.
I especially appreciate how much Psycho-Social nursing is involved with the job. I have found that a large percentage of my time with students is spent with mental health issues which in many cases may be attributable to lack of financial resources here (no jobs). I welcome community collaboration to help our students get their basic needs met so they can reach their academic goals. I would love to see the Monterey Bay area produce its own programs rather than recruiting/importing doctors, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, X-ray and EKG Techs. We need to grow our own.
